Purpose: To provide hands-on learning for employment service providers who are interested in implementing or are in the process of implementing evidence-based Supported Employment for people with mental illness as described in the SAMHSA Toolkits.

There are many definitions for "Supported Employment" in the field. Supported Employment, the evidence based practice, is unique in that it is based upon 7 well-researched, guiding principles. This workshop will describe each principle and how it differentiates SE from other traditional vocational practices, how techniques developed under the guidelines of the fidelity scale lead to quality outcomes and what it takes to be a strong Employment Specialist.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify Evidence-Based Supported Employment issues for People with Mental Illness;
• Describe the benefits of work for persons recovering from mental illness;
• Identify the 7 principles of Evidence-Based Supported Employment;
• Identify strategies to integrate with mental health treatment teams;
• Identify characteristics of strong Employment Specialists;
• Illustrate the efficacy of Supported employment programs versus traditional vocational rehabilitation programs.
